Question: I have a 5.5-year old daughter that has been running a 103.4 fever. She MAY have a sore throat. I have been treating her with child doses of Niquil and Pen VK 250 but the temp goes up and down. I have also been giving her cool showers. Nothing seems to be working.

Brief Answer:
Give paracetamol syrup

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Can understand your concerns.

Fever of 103 Fahrenheit is a matter of concern.

Since, you are giving nyquil which has Acetaminophen (fever reducer), Dextromethorphan (cough suppressant), Doxylamine succinate 26(antihistamine), it might be possible that she is not getting the correct dose of acetaminophen.

I suggest you to stop nyquil and give paracetamol syrup (5ml =125mg of acetaminophen) in dosage of 15 mg per kg three times a day for 1 day.

Continue antibiotic which you are giving.

Cold sponging should be done with cold water if fever is not relieved.

If still fever persists, then investigation should be done and an examination by Pediatrician is a must.

I hope this will help you.
Wishing your child good health.
Take care.
