Suggest Treatment For Hip Osteoarthrosis

Posted on Fri, 27 Jan 2017
Question: When I perform activities outside like snow shoveling, snow blowing, walking uphill or in snow, both of my hips give me a real aching pain, making it painful to walk. It doesn't take long for the dull, aching pain to present itself. The pain subsides immediately when I sit down. I am in decent shape but 20 pounds overweight.

Brief Answer:
Could be hip Osteoarthrosis or Lumbar spondylosis.

Detailed Answer:

Hi I am Dr Gopal Goel Orthopedic Surgeon.
You have pain in both hips while doing snoe shovelling , Snow blowing walkng uphill on in snow.
You are 64 and in good shape , bit overweight.
In my opinion there are two main causes of this pain
1. Direct hip pathology like Osteoarthritis hip- In this case pain is generally constant and limits hip movements.
2. Lumbar spondylosis : due to degenerative changes in the spine .In this case similar pain appears due to muscle spasm in back and hip region increases on heavy work.
I suggest you start mild pain killers , muscle relaxants, and physiotherapy to build your back and hip muscles.
For diagnosis we need X rays of both hips and lower back.
Thanks for the question. Please feel free to ask any question.
