Suggest Treatment For Hot Flashes And Mood Swings When On Estradiol

Question: I just had toe realignment surgery in my right foot. At two weeks now. Big toe has two screws, 2nd toes a pin, and 3,4 and 5 tendon extension or tightening. My surgeon has asked me to stop taking my 1mg a day of Estradiol. I'm dying with the hot flashes and mood swings. Is there a big deal about this? Ihave had the same surgery on left foot and two knee replacements within the last two years. I didn't have to stop the Estradiol then....why now? Thanks XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Advisable to stop HRT during surgery. SSRI's can be helpful.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your query.

I shall make an effort to provide you with good professional recommendations specific to your questions.
Women taking combined oral contraceptives or HRT are at increased risk of developing blood clots in the leg veins and in the lung. This risk is increased following major operations or leg surgery. So, it is wise to stop taking hormone replacement therapy for at least 2 weeks prior to surgery and for 1 - 2 weeks after surgery.
Women need not stop the pill provided you have been given treatment to help prevent venous thromboembolism, having injections of the drug, which thins the blood and reduces the risk of clot formation. It depends on lot of things which can be decided by examination and proper history.
The risks of stopping HRT are considerably less dramatic, but equally the risks of continuing it are undefined. The decision to stop medication implies that the risks of continuing a drug outweigh the risks of stopping it.

SSRI's are the group of prescription based medicines that will be helpful in reducing the menopausal symptoms, can be considered till you are off HRT.

Yet again, I duly appreciate your query to me, I do hope that you have found something useful to help you and I shall be glad to answer any further apprehensions.

Sincerely,
