Suggest Treatment For Hypothyroidism And Weight Gain

Question: I want to try Vyvanse because I just heard a news report that it has been approved for weight loss. I have symptoms that are very troublesome but I don't want to see a doctor about them. I have experienced a large unexpected weight gain, I am terribly depressed, my skin is getting more dry and cracked and bleeding because I scratch the itch. My mother and older sister had thyroid trouble and I feel sure I have hypothyroidism as well. I have gained so much weight that I rarely go outside unless I am sure I will not be seen by friends. Can you help me?

Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
I feel it would be appropriate if you undergo first thyroid function test viz,Serum T3,T4,TSH to exclude hypothyroidism which can be associated with undue weight gain. Hashimoto's thyroiditis , a common cause of hypothyroidism is an autoimmune disorder associated with genetic factors and you have a strong family history of thyroid disorder.
Lisdexamfetamine licensed under the brand name Vyvanse is used to treat binge-eating disorder in adults.
Vyvanse is not for weight loss. It is not known if Vyvanse is safe and effective for the treatment of obesity.
Moreover it is a prescription drug.
On the other hand ,if obesity is due to hypothyroidism,it has to be treated first and the treatment is simple thyroid replacement in once daily dosage.
