Yes, there can be permanent cure for thyroid problems depending upon the underlying cause.

For example if it is iodine deficiency hypothyroidism, it can get cured once the iodine levels are replenished.

Likewise, when the underlying cause is treatable the thyroid problem can be cured.

how come I know the cause? means whether it is due to iodine deficiency or something else?

There are tests like antithyroid antibodies, Antithyroglobulin antibody Thyroid radio-iodine scan etc. These will tell about the underlying cause for the thyroid dysfunction.
