Suggest Treatment For Improper Eyelid Closure

default
Posted on Fri, 18 Sep 2015
Question: My grandson is almost 3 yo. and healthy. The only problem is that at times when he goes to close his eyes or blink, his left eyelid doesn't close all the way. At times it does, but sometimes it doesn't, but there seems to be no reason for it. No hx of trauma. I am assuming it is a muscle weakness, but I don't know if it is a cause for concern or if he will outgrow this.
Thank you!

Brief Answer:
I wont get worried but still would like to get him evaluated

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for asking on this platform

I understand your concern. I won't get worried if the improper closure is not persistent, not on both side ,not associated with facial weakness or other ocular movement. This may be a subjective finding.
Let me explain the things.
In case of any primary muscle weakness it won't be limited to only one eye lid and also won't be intermittent.
Second possibility is muscle weakness is due to involvement of nerve supplying the eyelid muscle. The nerve which supplies the eyelid muscles, supply other muscles too; like oculomotor nerve supplies other ocular muscle(will lead to movement disorder of eye) and facial nerve which along with eye lid supplies facial muscles (will affect facial muscles).
So I wont get worried as symptom does not matches either into muscular or nerve weakness.
Still I would suggest you to get him evaluated by an ophthalmologist for complete evaluation and to eliminate your anxiety.

I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any more doubts.
Regards
