Suggest Treatment For Infected Wisdom Tooth
Question: Good day,
I have been experiencing wisdom tooth pain for a few months on and off. About 2 weeks ago after my right wisdom tooth was causing severe pain I went to a dentist to do a cleaning and find out what would be prescribed for the pain. Two (2) days after leaving the dentist a swollen red area formed between my gum and tooth. It began to cause more severe pain and my right cheek began to swell. The swollen red area also grew larger and now resembled a large pimple. I went to another dentist to have this checked out. From there I was told that it was an abscess. I was placed on an antibiotic and given pain killers for 5 days which has now passed. The swelling is still there (no pain though) and continues to ooze pus and blood. What can or should be done to get rid of this abscess?
Thank you in advance for your advice.

Brief Answer:
Pericoronal abscess, cellulitis, extraction of wisdom tooth
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query. I have gone through your query.
As far as the pain, swelling and pus discharge is concerned, it can be because of the gum infection (pericoronal abscess) leading to cellulitis. This occurs when there is no space for the wisdom tooth to erupt. Nothing to be panic, consult an oral maxillofacial surgeon and get the wisdom tooth removed (since the wisdom tooth is non functional).
I hope I have answered your query. If any queries are there, reply me back.
Take care.

Hello,
Thank you for your response.
I would like to try and save my wisdom tooth. Is doing an extraction the only treatment?

Brief Answer:
Operculectomy, extraction of the wisdom tooth
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your reply.
If you do not want to get the tooth removed, there is one more option called operculectomy (surgical removal of the gums covering the wisdom tooth). This can be done if there is sufficient space for the tooth to erupt. For this you need to get a radiograph done. Based on the availability of the space the treatment can be decided. It is better to get the tooth removed.
