Suggest Treatment For Insomnia While Having Hypothyroidism

I have hypothyroidism since 5yrs now. I have been taking thyronorm 100 mcg since then.
In 2011,
When diagnosed TSH was 29.5. Doc gave thyrox 75mcg. Level came to 1 after 2 months.
When i got checked after 3 mths, it was 19. So doc gave me thyronorm 100 mcg. Since then i m on sane dose with TSH level always 2-2.3.
5 mths back I m having high insomnia. I asked doc to reduce dose but he did not.
So I tried stopping medicine tired of insomnia and after that I used to get sleep every night. Aftr 6 weeks, it became 29.
Pls advice. What dose should I start with now? Should it be thyronorm, thyrox or eltroxin?

Hi,
Thanks for your query on HealthcareMagic,
I do understand your concern,
As per your history is concerned, you were diagnosed with hypothyroidism for which you'd taken medication. When you got diagnosed, your doctor advised you 75 mcg (it should be started from low dose and slowly increased).
After taking 100 mcg your level was 2-2.3 which is good so try to maintain in this range only and every 3 months check your TSH level.
Regarding insomnia, I may say that it can be due to many pathological causes so you should not stop it at all.
So you have asked about which brand to take and I may suggest that as you've commenced with Thyronorm so just continue with it and never change your brand without your doctor's advise.
Hope you got your answers.
Feel free to ask further.

For insomnia, 1-2 doctors suggested me sleeping pill which helpled initially but I did not want to depend on that.
There is no stress factor currently in life. I have experienced falling asleep easily for the time I had stopped medication. Only last 5 months I have experienced too much insomnia. Otherwise for 5 yrs, its been like 2-3 days in a week I would get less or disturbed sleep. But other days I would sleep for 7-8 hrs.
As per my understanding, this medication is causing disturbed sleep.
Can I start taking 75 mcg and a different brand?

Hi,
Thanks for your follow up question on HCM
As per your insomnia you can follow few practical advice like this-:
1)Do at least 30 mins exercise before 5 hours to bedtime
2)Check your medication history to optically discern if any products contain caffeine, if present eschew it
3)Try to avoid alcohol and nicotine at bed time
4)Make a sleep schedule
5)Try to avoid large meals and beverages at bed time
6)Do not eat, read, work, in bed.use bed room for sleeping only.
7)Make your bed room comfortable for sleep and make it noise free and do not keep alarm clock inside bedroom.
8)Do warm bath before going to bed which will relax your body and mind
9)Eating a banana can be useful in combating insomnia because it contains an amino acid called [tryptophan] that helps raise serotonin levels, which help regulate sleep patterns. It also will elevate your mood and help regulate your appetite. Minerals like iron, calcium, and potassium present in this fruit also help with sleep.
10)You can also have cumin tea to ease insomnia. To prepare the tea, heat one teaspoon of cumin seeds on low heat for about five seconds, add one cup of water and bring the mixture to a boil. Turn off the heat, cover the container and let it sit for about five minutes. Finally, strain and drink this cumin tea before bedtime.
So you can try these few simple tips and I hope you may not need any medications in the future.
You can try 75 mcg but check your TSH after one month and if drug adjustment required please talk to your endocrinologist to adjust it. Regarding brands I may say if your primary medication is not available then you can take other brands but I will not advise for frequent change in brands without any reason.
Hope that helps
Wishing you a good health.

I have few doubts concerning about my future health:
1. Does thyroid medicines have side effects?
2. In what cases, doctors reduce the dose and in which case they ask to stop the dose completely?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your follow up query
As per your query, my answer is as below-:
1) You have asked about “Does thyroid medicines have side effects?” Let me inform that like other medications it has side effects but if taken more than required but if taken as per your deficiency there will not be any quandary at all as it is a synthetic hormone required by our system.
2) You want to know in which situation doctor will reduce your dose and in my opinion, by taking medication when your TSH level decreases more than it's normal level it is termed as hyperthyroidism and in that situation you have to reduce your dose.
You may feel following clinical signs as below-
(a) sudden weight loss despite taking normal diet.
(b) rapid or anomalous heartbeats commonly more than 100 beats per minutes.
(c) increase appetite, nervousness, solicitousness, tremor, sweating excess,
(d) increased sensitivity to heat and more frequent bowel movements
3) You have asked that when your doctor will stop it completely, please note that treatment with levothyroxine is lifelong but doses which you are taking may change from time to time.
Hope you got your points
