Suggest Treatment For Intermittent Nausea, Abdominal Discomfort And Vomiting

default
Posted on Fri, 16 Dec 2016
Question: My younger sister, age 54 has had a three year history of intermittent nausea and vomiting that will last for days. She has upper abdominal discomfort at times with this. She also has vertigo at the start of these episodes. The thing that relieves her symptoms the most is sitting in a hot shower for sometimes hours. She has seen a gastroenterologist, has had an EGD and does have Barrets esophagus but per her MD this is not the cause. What type of specialist do you think she should see? She lives outside the XXXXXXX area and is desperate for help. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Could be due to gastritis

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone very carefully through your query. Your sister's problem is likely to be due to gastritis or gastroesophageal reflux. Our gastrointestinal tract has a forward propulsive movement (peristalsis) that moves the food material forward as it is digested, absorbed and finally expelled as feces. If somehow this movement gets hampered, food along with the digestive juices would stagnate, stomach acid will reflux into the food pipe and on the other hand the bowel habits would not be proper. That is the probable reason for the nausea and vomiting.

In order to relieve her, you need insist her to to do the following:
* Avoid spicy food. Take small but frequent meals. Avoid long gaps between meals.
* Avoid alcohol intake (if it a part of your habit).
* Take Prilosec (omeprazole) once daily before breakfast.
* Take plenty of green leafy vegetables as well as other sources of dietary fibers. Take fiber supplements like isabgol/psyllium husk or senna. I would insist you to increase your dietary fiber intake.
* Regular morning walk and exercise to keep the bowel movements proper.
* Take curd or yogurt on daily basis. It contains beneficial bacteria and should help.
* Yoga and meditation should help.

Hope that helps.

Let me know if I could help further.

Regards
