Suggest Treatment For Iron Deficiency Anemia
Question: For aout 6 weeks now I have had a dry mouth and periodically I get the chills but no fever. I have had 2 blood tests that showed I recently experienced a mono episode. Vitamin D registered 38 low. Absolute Lymphocytes measured 1069 which I guess is low and my total iron measured 34 low and saturation of iron measured 7 and iron binding capacity was 491 elevated. All other results were normal. Also have troubles sleeping at night. Is this low iron thing a lot of my troubles or should I be looking elsewhere? Looking for help. Thanks! Any questions feel free to ask me.
Brief Answer:
Iron deficiency anemia, upload lab results with proper units
Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome
I appreciate your concern
Iron deficiency anemia is the most likely diagnosis but the iron panel should not be interpreted in isolation. Firstly, Hemoglobin and hematocrit values need to be known before the iron studies. The values for the labs you have provided are without units. Kindly upload a scanned copy of the blood counts and iron panel along with the other investigations to guide you accordingly. You may also list the values with their respective units.
Wishing you best of health
Thanks

I have uploaded lab results. I hope I did it correctly. Thank You!
Brief Answer:
Low iron stores, Ferritin, Peripheral smear should be done
Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
Thanks for uploading the results. I went through the labs diligently and have the following observations.
The Mono infection ( Infectious Mononucleosis) is not a recent infection. IgG antibodies indicate a past infection while an IgM raised titer shows a recent infection. Vitamin D levels are not low and are within range. Hence , no need to supplement for vitamin D. LFTs, RFTs, Electrolytes and Lipid Profile are normal. A low Iron level is usually associated with an anemic patient. Diet deficient in iron, excessive Loss of iron via heavy bleeding, as in menses and mal absorption from food, in conditions like coeliac disease are mainly responsible for low iron levels in the body. Cause for the iron deficiency needs to be determined. Anemia affects the body systemically , though you have a high hemoglobin and hematocrit at present. Low iron stores eventually leading to anemia can cause insomnia. If these conditions have occurred recently the hemoglobin is bound to go down. Two investigations that would have cleared the picture , much more would be a PERIPHERAL SMEAR and SERUM FERRITIN. The absolute lymphocytes, TLC are in range and you need not worry about that. I would advise you to discuss these options with your doctor and consult a hematologist for further workup.

Just got my ferritin level blood test back. It showed 134 is this ok? Thanks!
Brief Answer:
Yes, the ferritin is in normal range
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Yes the ferritin is in normal range. In men, 24 to 336 nanograms per milliliter S.I or 24 to 336 micrograms per liter I.U is normal. Did you get the peripheral smear results or not ?
Thanks.
