Suggest Treatment For Irregular Heartbeat While On BP Medication
Question: My sister has been diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat. Her doctor immediately put her on a blood pressure pill eloquist.. Also, she is wearing a heart monitor for 1 month. Her recent heart sonogram indicated she has 2 leaking valves but the doctor is not too concerned with this, she is 75 yrs of age. However, the doctor is advising to do a remedy of shocking the heart to get it into a regular rythem. My sister is concerned with this procedure but does not like taking medications, especially this blood thinner. She has been a healthy person all her life and does regular exercise and is very active. She believes her condition was caused by taking Advil for the last 6 months due to arthritis in her knee. Do you have any suggestions?

Well, since the electrical converting into normal sinus rhythm was recommended to your sister, it means that the other medication-based alternatives have been tried, and not succeeded. I do not think ibuprofen (Advil) has caused this arrhythmia to your sister. Indeed, it has side effects associated with the stomach, but not with the heart rhythm. In this case, I would also recommed and carry out the electrical converting into sinus rhythm which also shortens the time of the "blood thinner" to be used. Right after she is converted into the normal sinus rhythm, the "blood thinner", by indications, is used only for an additional 15-30 days, until the control echo cardiogram confirms that no signs of thrombi are present in the heart atria.
