Brief Answer:
It's not lethal, she has developed contact dermatitis
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for being at healthcaremagic
You don't have to worry as it is not lethal.
Your wife has developed contact dermatitis to elephant yam.
If I was her treating doctor I would suggest her to take antihistaminics like levocetrizine and apply corticosteroids like clobetasol propionate on the affected hands.
These are prescription medicines and you need to see the doctor in person to get them.
I hope to have answered your query.
I would be happy to clarify any further doubts.

Can she take these medications if she is possibly pregnant?
Also are there any home remedies ( general skin lotion or sanitizer etc ) that can help ?

Brief Answer:
Take chlorpheniramine instead of levocetrizine
Detailed Answer:
If she is pregnant she should take chlorpheniramine for itching instead of levocetrizine. Though she can apply clobetasol propionate once daily for few days.
Also ask her to keep her hands moisturised by frequent use of a good quality moisturising cream along with oiling of hands.
