Question: Hello I am a 53 yr old female . My symptoms started with a itchy outer ear which I likely irritated from itching it. That night I got itching on my palms top of hands arms wrists feet and next day my ear swelled .fingers above knuckle joints / also where I itched, they swelled and I had red rashes in many areas included front and back of neck. I went to emergency room. Doctor said allergic reaction put me on prednisone and antihistamine. Today have gotten different type of hives than red ones, which I had yesterday. They are larger and paler. I have history of arthritis. Can you help with more info and any other information on other possible answers. I live in rural northern town. Thanks

Brief Answer:
Need injectable steroids and anti histamines and some blood workup

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible. Based on the history you have shared, it seems to be allergic but association with arthritis raises need to exclude some connective tissue diseases though these usually not present themselves at this age but exceptions does exist. In that case treatment has to be different since rash with arthritis necessitates blood workup for autoimmune diseases as well as to look for kidney functions as some sorts of vasculitis may present like this. Meanwhile keep using steroids and anti histamines. Adding protection for stomach with antacids like omeperazole or pantoprazole with steroids intake is a must. If symptoms are still uncontrolled then intravenous injectable steroids will be needed along. Topical applications are also available to reduce itching and other symptoms. Hope this has answered your query, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Get well soon. Regards.
