Suggest Treatment For Kidney Failure When Treating Alzheimer's Disease
Question: My husband (with Alzheimers) now has kidney failure. He has a catheter, and so far, is urinating enough. What do I need to know about possible further treatment? He is with Hospice.

Is it a chronic or acute kidney failure?
Acute kidney failure can be completely healed without any further problems. It appears due to dehydration or urine flow blockage. If the reason of acute failure is removed, kidneys get back to proper function.
Chronic kidney failure is constantly progressing disease which can not be reversed or healed. It can be cause by diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney inflammation (glomerulonephritis).
If he has acute kidney failure (from previous question I can see he had some problems with urinating) and the cause was removed, he does not need any further treatment and the failure should be long gone now. You can check it with creatinine level check.
Chronic kidney failure progression can be delayed by hypertension and diabetes treatment. In some cases it can be treated with kidney transplantation.
As he has catheter it is necessary to check for urinary tract infection. Regular urine analysis should be done.
