Brief Answer:
Limb elevation, pain killers, ice

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the query.

A haematoma of large size in your husband's leg can be quite painful and difficult to move around with. I can understand the trouble that he is going through.

The advise given by his Doctor is absolutely correct. The leg must be elevated over a couple of pillows to a level placed above that of the heart. This will help drain the swelling away towards the heart and provide quick relief.

You must continue ice application on all the painful and swollen areas, which will reduce the symptoms of inflammation and pain. He can take anti-inflammatory medicines to aid in this effect like Tablet Ibuprofen 400mg twice a day after a meal, provided he does not have stomach or kidney problems. Keep him well hydrated with 1-2 litres of water daily. He must get a healthy, balanced diet for quick recovery.

This process shall take about 5-7 days to completely resolve if he is taken care of well.

Once the swelling subsides and if he finds it difficult to walk or any significant weakness, there could be muscle tear which needs more rest. He would need an Orthopaedic consult in such a case, to assess any muscle tear and the severity of the tear if any.

I hope I have answered your query.
