Question: I am taking Zoloft, Atenalol 25mg and Lisinapril, and have a rash on my chest, upper arms (symmetrical rash) and now on my thighs. Seeing a dermatologist this coming Friday. She did a biopsy 6 weeks ago, also had a biopsy last year which came back lichenoid dermatitis. Been treat ing it with a cream. What happens if I come off these drugs? I had a moderate heart attack 21 years ago, have mild hypertension, with no problems since. Have been online constantly researching, and found out this information. I am an RN, retired, 75 years old in reasonably good health. Help!! Carole XXXXXXX

I would explain as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that it is important to explore which of your current medications have exacerbated your skin rash.

Coming to this point, it is necessary to withdraw of the actual drugs. I believe that if a suspicion could be raised over the actual medications, the first to consider would be Atenolol and Lisinopril which may exert similar cutaneous adverse effects in certain individual.

As your Atenolol daily dosage is small, the risk of rebound phenomenon while withdrawing would be insignificant.

The problem that may arise would be exacerbation of high blood pressure values.

In this regard, it is necessary to discuss with your prescribing doctor on the possibility of considering an alternative anti-hypertensive therapy, in case your blood pressure destabilizes while on wash out period of the current medications.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

In case of any further uncertainties, feel free to ask me again.

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
