Suggest Treatment For Lingering Cough With Body Ache And Fever

Question: I've been suffering for 16 days with what I though was a virus. It started with a sore throat, body aches, and fever. After two days the fever and body aches left. I was then left with a sore throat. After a couple more days a cough started. I've been coughing since. My throat is very irritated and has spots on it. I saw the doctor and had a rapid strep test done. It was negative. The last couple of days my throat has become more sore. The cough is lingering. My doctor thinks its's just viral but I've not had a virus linger so long before. Also, today my gums on my lower right jaw have become painful and swollen. I believe related to the illness I have. Could I have developed something worse?
