Suggest Treatment For Liposarcoma In The Thigh
Question: My 34 yr old son has just had a golf ball size tumor removed from the inside of his thigh near his groin. The biopsy report has not come back yet, but the surgeon said he thought it could be a liposarcoma. The tumor was not growing out of tissue but rather seemed to be attached by a fatty cord going u to the pelvis. No additional tissue was removed othe than the tumor. If it is a liposarcoma, what is the treatment and probablity of cure. Also if radiation is used to treat, can the testicles be shielded so he won't become sterile?
Brief Answer:
Yes radiation may be required
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
This may be a sarcoma. Everything now depends on biopsy report. Not only will it confirm the diagnosis, but also it will give the size, grade and margin status.
If it is high grade or more than 5 cm or margins involved, then radiation definitely required. Probability of cure is there but percentage depends on above factors. For example, 5 year cancer free survival in high grade 5 cm margins free tumor is around 70%. Of course, testicles can be shielded.
Role of chemotherapy in sarcomas, especially liposarcoma is not established.
Hope this helps.
Regards
