Question: My wife had a malignant tumour removed from her cerebellum (posteria fossa mass). She then underwent 12 sessions of whole brain palliative radiotherapy. She has been diagnosed with a metastic adenocarcinoma of unknown primary origin. Other tests could not confirm the primary origin. She has chosen not to have palliative chemotherapy. Since the radiotherapy, her appetite has gone, she cannot eat anything sweet, and she is losing weight. What do you suggest?

Brief Answer:
appetite stimultant

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Since your wife has no appetite, cannot eat anything sweet and losing weight after radiotherapy i will advise her to have an appetite stimultant syrup 2 tsf twice daily half an before food.

It can help her to gain weight.

She needs to consume foods such as eggs, meat, fish, milk and milk products, wheat, rice, along with enough amount of fruits and vegetables

She can also try protein supplement drinks io increase her weight.

Betanoid contains steroid which can cause side effects such as hirsutism, flushing, increased bruising, acne, hyperglycaemia and disturbances of electrolyte balance and is better to avoid.

Discuss with your treating physician regarding the choice of appetite stimultant syrup.

She has lost most of her hair, so hirsutism is not a problem.

As I said, she cannot tolerate anything sweet! The oncologist does not think the radiotherapy is the cause of this. Doctor from hospice seems to think betanoid will help. What appetite stimilant can you suggest?

Fruits are too sweet for her, but she is eating eggs and wheat cereals.
