Suggest Treatment For Loss Of Appetite, Sore Throat And Cough
Acid reflux due to cough
Detailed Answer:
Hi. Thank you for writing to HCM.
Bronchitis explains all your symptoms and what you are experiencing is commonly noted in many patients who have bronchitis.
Here is how - Bronchitis leads to excessive coughing. During every cough there is a sudden increase in pressure within the abdomen, pushing the acid upwards into the esophagus (food pipe). This leads to the acid sometimes being pushed into the throat causing soreness and also loss of appetite due to the acidic irritation of the esophagus. In addition, with your age, the ability of the lower esophageal sphincter to contract effectively may have declined, precipitating this condition.
Even though this can be a reasonable explanation, it is my opinion that you have yourself evaluated by a gastroenterologist to rule out other common causes of loss of appetite such as liver involvement or hiatus hernia etc. Also it may be necessary to undergo an upper GI endoscopy to have a look at the throat, food pipe and stomach for any other possible conditions.
In my opinion a good antacid such as a proton pump inhibitor, along with drinking plenty of fluids and cutting down on spicy diet/tea/coffee/smoking/alcohol for 3-4 weeks will relieve you from most of these symptoms. It is important that your bronchitis is kept under control during this time as well. A pulmonologists opinion is also recommended.
Hope this information helps. Do let me know if you have any other concerns.
