Brief Answer:
probably not

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

although there is no clinical way to discriminate between bacterial and viral etiology, there are some symptoms that indicate virus involvement. Cough is one of them. A runny nose is another one. Clinical examination would provide additional clues to the diagnosis (like enlarged and painful lymph nodes). It's always better to let your doctor decide on the treatment options, but your symptoms are more likely to have been caused by a virus, so an antibiotic is probably not needed.

I hope it helps!
Kind Regards!

OK so day 6 of not feeling well.
My big concern is that we have a vacation in europe in 12 days.
Today I am experiencing an ache in my jaw/tooth, productive cough with thick green sputum mainly in the morning.
Should I get some profilatic antibiotics so this is all taken care of before our vacation?
It's a 9 hour flight
Thanks

I must add my son came home from University am gave me this. He has had exact same symptoms but a week ahead of mine. He currently now just has a lingering cough.
This seems like more than a cold. Possibly the flu

Brief Answer:
you'd better visit a doctor

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

if after 6 days you still have new symptoms then perhaps you should visit a doctor to clarify the situation. Sometimes during the course of diseases with runny nose, the paranasal sinuses may become infected and cause sinusitis. Headache, nasal congestion, runny nose and perhaps fever are the symptoms. In such cases antibiotics are required. A diagnosis is required first!

I wouldn't be concerned about the trip because 12 days is a lot of time. Sometimes cough may persist but you should be feeling good by then in every other regard (besides the cough that is).

I can't say whether it's the flu. One of the most prominent symptoms of the flu is muscle aches, sometimes debilitating and extreme fatigue. You haven't mentioned such symptoms, but it can't be excluded without lab tests. Your symptoms are not typical of the flu though.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
