Suggest Treatment For Lower Back And Hip Pain In An Elderly Person

Disc disease, nerve compression
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
I am Dr. Shuba Hariprasad and will be answering your query today.
Based on your symptoms, I would like to primarily rule out spinal disc disease and nerve compression
I recommend:
- an orthopedic consult
- MRI of the spine to check for slipped disc or spondylosis ( narrowing of the space between 2 bones of the spine causing nerve compression)
- avoid any activity that worsens or causes your symptoms
- try to monitor the way you walk and make sure you dont put your weight on any one side
- avoid standing for to long. take frequent breaks. If you cant sit, just flex your back , knees and hips a little (put your palms on your thighs) to take the pressure of your spine.
- strengthen core muscles (abdomen and back by focused exercises to these muscles)
- lose weight (if overweight)
-stop smoking (if you do)
- take warm baths and apply antiinflammatory gels to the affected area to relieve any inflammatory pain.
- Don't bend to pick up things, squat a little to do so.
- avoid sudden twisting movement and jerky impact to your spine (horse riding, for instance)
See an orthopedic doctor at the earliest. The sooner the problem in treated, the quicker and more complete , the recovery will be.
At the least, you will need to make lifestyle changes to prevent further worsening and avoiding recurrence.
Surgery is only indicated if there problem in severe or there is a risk of nerve damage.
I know that you dread sitting on a couch or lying in bed when you have such a busy schedule. however, this may need to be done to avoid giving it all up permanently!
Hope this helps . I wish you good health.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Regards,
Dr.Shuba Hariprasad
