Suggest Treatment For Lower Back Pain After Tail Bone Injury

Posted on Tue, 4 Aug 2015
Question: I fell off a ladder two days ago. Fell on my tailbone and left hip. Did not hit my head, luckily, because I have an aneurysm coil and clip. Anyway, As soon as I fell, I hit hard on my left hip and tailbone. Immediate pain of course. I rolled over and got up. Went to get ice. About 30 second later, an intense all over body heat came over me, ringing in my ears, sounds were distorted, clammy skin. After I raised my legs and put ice on my back, I began to cool down and feel better in about 30 minutes. Heat gradually left and distorted hearing sounds left. My left femur still hurts, and tailbone is sore. Neck muscles are stiff, I think due to holding head up in the fall to keep from hitting my head. I have had bad lower back pain in the past(without a fall) and immediate heat, came clammy skin, and distorted sound in my ears. Can you help these symptoms make sense please?

Brief Answer:
A vasovagal response.

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Judging from those symptoms of heat sensation, sweating, distorted sound in the ears I think it was a typical vasovagal response. It is a response characterized by heart slowing and dilatation of arterioles (small blood vessels in the periphery), with lowering of blood pressure.

It can originate through different mechanism involving the brain or the heart. In your case it originates in the brain, initiated in a structure called hypothalamus which in turn influences cardiovascularcenters in the medulla. It can be triggered by pain or by strong emotional distress, in your case I believe it was a case of both.

It is transitory and harmless, so no treatment is needed, no worry.

I hope to have been of help.
