Question: Hi Doctor,
I am suffering from Lower back from the past 10 days, Pain is only on the lower back and I drive car 2-3 hrs/day and work on computer for 8-9 hrs/day.
Upon searching on net, I consider this as a Simple or a unspecific Back pain. I see a general suggestion that, it is common to everyone at certain point and will be resolved in few days upon continuing the regular activities. What do you suggest?

Brief Answer:
Features suggestive of Lumbago

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX, Hi
Welcome.

I appreciate your concern for the low back.
After having gone through the history described in your I am of the opinion that you have developed low back pain which is referred to as "Lumbago".

It can be caused by a number of factors such as working sitting down in the wrong position for hours together, suddenly making the wrong movement or turning around or a combination of both, lifting something in the wrong posture or one sided pressure being exerted on the back.

It can also be caused by psychological factors such as stress, overwork, depression, fear, etc.

Kindly provide the following details:

1. Are you overweight?
2. Does this pain radiate (moves down) to the legs?
3. Do you have any tingling sensation in the thigh or legs?

Awaiting your reply.

Best regards.

Hi Doctor,
Thanks for your reply.

I have not lifted any over weights in the past 10 days.

Below are answers to your questions
1. Are you overweight? - My weight is 70kgs and my height is 5 feet 11 inches.
2. Does this pain radiate (moves down) to the legs? - No, I don't have any noticeable pain in my legs.
Pain is only in the lower back and it is like pin pinching pain.
3. Do you have any tingling sensation in the thigh or legs? - No, I don't have any tingling sensation.

Please suggest what to do?

Brief Answer:
Life style modification is recommended.

Detailed Answer:
Hi!
Thanks for your compliment and the follow up query.
Glad to know that you are not overweight & the pain is more of localized in nature.

You seem to have some sort of muscle sprain responsible for the back ache and this appears to be due to prolonged sitting postures or sitting in a wrong posture, etc.

There is nothing to worry about it.

You need to have some life style modification to over come this problem like;

1. Avoid prolonged sitting on the desk top, improve your posture, have frequent breaks in between
2. Avoid stress if you have
3. Avoid lifting or shifting heavy objects
4. Do regular exercise

For immediate relief of pain you may take Paracetamol or Ibuprofen tablets.
You may also apply Diclofenac or Mefenemic acid gel on the affected part.

If the symptom persist or if you start getting radiating pain to the legs with or without tingling or numbness sensation, an orthopedic consultation is advised.

Hope I could answer your query.

Wishing you best of your health.

Thank you Doctor.

I will follow your advice and consult a orthopedist if the pain radiates to legs.

I stopped going to gym for the past 2weeks and started doing yoga daily morning which are specific to back pain. Can I continue gym or only yoga is suggested? I do only weights in gym like Chest exercise, shoulder exercise, biceps, etc.

Should I do any changes in my sleeping position? Like Sleeping flat on back as much as possible or sleeping on floor for some days?

Brief Answer:
You may continue doing exercise.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your compliment and the follow up query.

Honestly speaking doing exercise in a proper way will solve your problem.

Avoid weight lifting exercise like weights, you can do bench press for chest & should exercise. While in sleeping position you can raise your legs up to 45 degree one at a time this will definitely reduce the spasms at the back muscle.

You must avoid using soft mattress, you may sleep on the floor with proper thick bed sheet, you may change your position to either left or right if you are comfortable.

Hope I could answer your query.
Wishing you best of your health.
