Suggest Treatment For Lump In The Middle Of Neck

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Apr 2015
Question: I have a "lump" in the middle of my neck at the back right where my skull meets the neck. I noticed it 5 weeks ago, it seems maybe a little bigger than it was about 3 or 4 weeks ago. I have episodes of feeling as though the room is moving, they usually last about 10 seconds or so. The "lump" doesnt hurt at all even when touched, but after touching it or area around it I get a headache. I have headaches every day now..some last a couple of hours and some seem like I wake with them and they last all day until I go to sleep and then I wake up at night and still have them. I wake up several times every night. I'm exhausted most of the time even if I've done nothing but lay around. When I first noticed this lump it was because I had a pressure/swollen feeling through my head/neck/face that felt like it spread all over my body, this lasted a day and a half..now sometimes I have episodes of this that last anywhere from a few mins to a few hours. I seem to be having "dumb minutes" as I call them. Like driving through an intersection and having to stop and think if that light was even green when I drove through, or logging info at work like I've done thousands of times but seem to write the wrong items in the columns or meaning to write arm and writing mar. I seem to get irritable easily, and when there's multiple sounds at the same time I get a feeling of needing to stop all the noise. I went to PCP and she said she couldnt feel anything and if it were worrisome she would be able to feel it. I think it's worrisome.i dont have any allergies.

Brief Answer:
Visit hospital; get appointment for a surgeon

Detailed Answer:
Hello

My name is Dr Muhammad Ali Rauf & i will look into your problem.

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way. There could be a number of causes for this swelling. If you feel then for your personal satisfaction we can go forward with some workup to confirm its cause. I would suggest you to visit hospital and get an appointment for a general surgeon. Before that, visit Ultrasound Department and get an ultrasound(USG) of the swelling. Take USG report to surgeon. After examining he might go with biopsy of the swelling or excision. This all treatment will depend upon the results of tests & examination. Meanwhile i would suggest you not to take stress because stress almost always aggravates the problem. Hopefully it will be benign thing which will cure.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!

Would you consider this serious then? I'm a little concerned it could be cancer? My mother's side of family has cancer history, stroke. My father's side has diabetes, heart disease. I have PCOS.

Brief Answer:
Too early to label it serious/cancer; most probably not cancer

Detailed Answer:
Hello

thank you for the followup query.

It is too early to say if its cancer. we need to biopsy it for labeling it. Chances are unlikely at this point because that location you mentioned usually does not possess cancer site and also your age factor(cancer in most cases start late in life) is unusual for cancer. Differential could be a lipoma or sebaceous cyst. Both are benign conditions that can be cured by simple local excision. I would suggest you not to worry and follow the earlier mentioned procedure to confirm its status.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.

Could this be part of a Lupus flare? There is Lupus history in the family.

Brief Answer:
Unlikely to be lupus flare

Detailed Answer:
Hello

thank you for the followup query.

No, its unlikely to be lupus. The most common symptoms of lupus are:

Extreme fatigue (tiredness)
Headaches
Painful or swollen joints
Fever
Anemia
Swelling (edema) in feet, legs, hands, and/or around eyes
Pain in chest on deep breathing (pleurisy)
Butterfly-shaped rash across cheeks and nose
photosensitivity
Hair loss
Abnormal blood clotting
Mouth or nose ulcers

I would suggest you again NOT to worry that much. Too much stress/anxiety will aggravate your problem. Just relax and follow the steps mentioned earlier.

Feel free to get back for if you have any other questions.!
