Question: my 8 year old grand daughter has a lump inside her ear canal that she had a year ago in the same spot so the first time she had this we went to er and they lanced it open and thick nasty whitish stuff came out the doc said he didn't know the cause only that it was infection. so one year later its back again so back to er and this doc decides to stab her ear and alls it did was bleed . it was already painful before being stabbed with huge needle and the doc didn't even stick her where I seen the stuff come from prior. so she sends us home saying see an ear doc but last night her ear swelled completely shut and 130 am she began throwing up non stop till 430 am can someone please tell me what this is thank you

Brief Answer:
Infected sebaceus cyst.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

This lump looks like an infected sebaceus cyst. Such cyst is build of whitish masses and covered with a capsule. Once it gets infected, pus appears inside what leads to pain, redness and swelling. Incising it and pus evacuating is only a temporal solution. As long as the whole lesion with capsule wont be removed, this problem will recur.
Moreover, when this lesion gets incised, swab test should be done to determine the type of bacteria. Ear is very close to brain so any infection in this area is much more serious than in any other place in the body.
That is why she should get antibiotic as well.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
