Question: What causes a small lymph node to come up on your arm pit?

Brief Answer:
Needs to be seen by a doctor.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,

As you may know, we have lymph nodes all over our body. They have their own circulatory system and have lymphatic cells (a type of white blood cell) that can help clean up infections in the region that they are near. For example, the tonsils are a type of lymphatic tissue that helps prevent respiratory infection. Lymph nodes swell when there is infection or inflammation in the region. However, lymph nodes themselves can get diseased. For this reason, even though it may be innocuous, I strongly advise that you go in to your doctor for the lump to be examined. It may be a solitary lymph node. It may also be other kinds of lumps such as from a sweat gland, or a benign fatty tumor. So this needs to be checked out.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information or clarification.

It just came up here today. Do you think it may be okay though? I will get itbchecked out if it is still there

Answered by Dr. Bonnie Berger-Durnbaugh (7 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Less concerning if it's only been there today.

Detailed Answer:
If it just started today and you are sure it hasn't been there before, then you can "watch and wait". I can't say whether it is ok though as I don't have the advantage of examining it. It may not be a lymph node at all - it may be a skin infection or the other things I listed above. You can put warm-hot wet compresses (wash cloth) on it a few times a day for the next few days, and if it is still there on Monday, then call your doctor or go in to a clinic.

Brief Answer:
OK

Detailed Answer:
Then it could be temporary increase in lymphatic drainage from the increased circulation or inflammation in the region . The concern is if it doesn't go away.

doctor
Answered by Dr. Bonnie Berger-Durnbaugh (6 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
No need for HIV testing:

Detailed Answer:
No need for HIV testing unless you've used IV drugs and shared needles, been poked by a needle that an HIV user used, or had sexual contact with exchange of body fluids.

We now know that casual contact, even with objects that were recently contaminated with HIV, is not a risk. HIV does not live on surfaces for more than a few seconds.
