default
Posted on Sat, 10 Oct 2015
Question: I think husband has male candidiasis. He has some sort of rash on the tip of his penis, on the shaft and the ring.Looks like blisters. It burns when washed with soap. What should we do? What OTC medication can you suggest? It increases when he comes after playing and sweating. As of now he has been applying candid b cream for 5 days. There has been little improvement. Teh problem has been there for around 15 days.

Brief Answer:
Need to see the picture.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Greetings from Dr Divakara P.
Thanks for posting your query.

By the description , it could be either viral infection or fungal. It is important to differentiate between them as treatment is totally different.

But what makes you think it as candidiasis, did he has it before anytime?

If it is possible kindly upload a picture so that I can diagnose properly.

Till then he can use Candid cream ( not candid b ) . Also he has to avoid water contact over the lesions and keep the genital area dry.

Also avoid sexual contact till it heals.

Kindly revert back with a picture if possible.

Regards.

I do not have a pic as he is not in town. I maybe wrong about candidiasis. He just told me his issue.

I again questioned he says it looks like blisters, small/tiny red dots on the penis head and around the ring.

Brief Answer:
It seems like Herpes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Well blisters is more indicative of Viral Infections-- Most likely Herpes Infection.

For that he needs to take Oral Anti Viral Medicines like ( Acyclovir ) but since this is a prescription only drug he may have to consult a doctor for that.

He can use Acyclovir gel which may be available as OTC medicine.

Hope this information was useful to you
Any clarifications feel free to ask.

Thank you for the clarification.

a few more questions. I read somewhere that herpes infection is an STD and relapses several time and is not good even for the partner. Does that mean we have to avoid physical contact whenever he gets it? What are the chances of me getting it?

Thank you,
doctor

Brief Answer:
Doesn't relapse if both patient and partner are treated.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Yes herpes is an STD.

If properly treated it won't relapse but the partner also has to get examined and if found to be infected partner also has to take medication simultaneously.

It is the failure to recognise and treated the partner that cause the relapse of Herpes.

Well yes you need to avoid sexual contact with him till his lesions get cured.

Definitely there is a good chance of you getting it , if you had sexual contact with him recently.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarification feel free to ask.

Regards.
