Suggest Treatment For Manic Episodes And Possible Drug Abuse

Question: I am bipolar Mom with a young adult son that I suspect is having a manic episode and/or is abusing drugs. Divorced 10 years, I believe son is angry especially at me because he thinks it is my fault that he is having behavior issues. History: overprivilaged child, did not have sever anger issues as chld, used to be pretty easy going. Has recently threatened Father physically, asked if I wanted to kill him, stated he wished was never born and why did we have him. Spouse & I have poor relationship, but are in agreement that our son needs help. Is there anything that we can do to calm him until we can get him to therapy?

I understood form your question : You are suffering from bipolar disorder. You are on treatment temazepam, Ativan, citolapram, and lamotrigene. You are stable on medicines.You have been divorced since 10 years. You and your husband care for your son though divorced.
You have asked for your son's problem. He is 22. He is likely having manic episode and/or drug abuse as per your observation.


From your narration it seems that your son is surely in need of consultation and treatment by a psychiatrist.
He is threatening his father and wished that he were not born suggest some psychological problem. As you have bipolar, possibility of bipolar disorder is there in him.

If he is behaving in a manner that he can harm himself or others , you must take him to the hospital emergency room by convincing him. If he is not ready to go to hospital, take help of your husband,your friends or with help of police.

If his behavior is not violent, try to counsel him that, " Dear Son,I can understand your stress and anger.I have some psychiatric problem and I am better with medicines.Your problem can also be solved with help of professional like your mom's problem has been solved.Please do not take any step which can harm you or others until we get an appointment with doctor"

You or any person around him try to remain calm and not abusive to him in any way. Anger against anger can worsen the situation.
