Suggest Treatment For Microphthalmia And Small Cornea With Diffused Retina Atrophy
Yes cataract surgery and intraocular lens insertion is advised.
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health Care Magic.
I am Dr. Dadapeer K an ophthalmologist and I will be answering your question.
I reviewed your history.
It seems from the history that your friend is having microphthalmos, small cornea with retinal detachment, cataract and glaucoma.
His next management depends on the vision present now and the status of the retinal detachment.
If he is having vision of atleast perception of light with some part of the retina still working, then I would advice to go for cataract surgery and placement of intraocular lens and treatment of glaucoma.
Hence provide me more details like
Vision in the affected eye
status of retinal detachment
Stage of cataract and glaucoma
Please provide me these details so that I can answer your question more accurately.
Hope this is helpful to you.
Do write back to me for further questions.
Thank you
With regards
1. As I said in my original description of the situation, my relative had the visual acuity limitation since birth, which is limited only to the perception of a moving hand and light.
2. The retinal detachment occurred in 2007 and remains stagnant since then.
3. The onset of cataract ( which is described by the local ophthalmologist as a "nuclear cataract") and the glaucoma are recent events. The glaucoma is treated pharmaceutically.
4. My question is focus then : IS THE CATARACT OPERATION AND THE INSERTION OF A NEW LENS ADVISABLE AND WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN IF THE OPERATION IS NOT PERFORMED?
Cataract surgery is not required at present.
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.
Since the vision in the affected eye is only perception of light, cataract surgery will not improve the vision.
Hence at present the cataract surgery is not required for him.
If the cataract is not operated now, slowly it can progress resulting in maturation of cataract. This process may take few years. If the cataract progresses and matures then cataract surgery is required. Otherwise as of now cataract surgery is not required for him.
Hope this is helpful to you.
