Question: My son is 9 months old, he ran a low grade fever 101.5 (3 days ago). Since the fever broke he has a some gunk leaking out of his eye...more apparent when he wakes up from naps, etc. His nose is running moderatley (more apparent when sneezes), his voice sounds muffled like he has a sore throat or has mucous in his chest. He is very sleepy/clingy and just not acting like himself. His eyes look glazed. I'm a little concerned with his lack of appetite and he's not nursing/eating as much either. Should I have him checked out by our pediatrician? Or wait it out?

Brief Answer:
It seems to be a case of a viral infection

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details provided. Most often such symptoms in children of this age is usually caused due to certain viral infections which can last for 5-10 days irrespective of use of antibiotics. But the fever needs to be desperately brought under control. Give paracetamol and some tepid sponging as well for the same. The muffled voice, runny nose, sneezing as well as the discharge from his eyes is is due to an allergic component associated with such infections. Some anti-allergic medicines like cetirizine given once a day during such episodes should help. You need to give steam inhalation.

You should take the child to a doctor and get him examined especially if the fever lasts for more than 7 days or if the child becomes lethargic. But if you feel apprehensive, it might be a good idea to get him checked by a pediatrician to be safe. Not feeding well or the eyes feeling glazed are not very good signs.

Thank you for the detailed answer.

He hasn't had a fever for 3 days now so that is under control.

If it is a viral infection, it seems the best route would be to provide comfort and wait out the infection until it passes?

He is still nursing, just not taking in as much milk as usual.

Brief Answer:
You need not worry

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

It is good to hear that the fever is down for last few days. In that case you can wait and observe. Chances are that he would get well soon. It is not unusual for children not to eat well when they are not well. I would not really get concerned at the moment. Just give him rest and he would gradually recover.
