Brief Answer:
It all depends on the situation

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

Most of the person with mild mental retardation do well in life and require minimal support from family members. They have difficulty in taking complex decisions but carry forward work assigned to them.

Your description that sometime he does not behave nicely indicates that he is having behavioral symptoms due to mental retardation. although medications are useful for this, avoiding argument or going with flow is best strategy to deal with abnormal behavior.

Marriage neither protects nor aggravates problem. Like for a normal individual it all depends on the interaction between both partners. You need to take care that no undue arguments takes place between your brother any of individuals of family including his wife. In addition to this if his behavior problem persists seek help from nearby psychiatrist of your city. That will suffice to tackle most of the problems.

Hope I am able to answer your concerns.

Doctor, Is avoiding arguements and going with the flow is only option we can do with him. There is no long term sustainable solution for the same.? As we all know that that we are expecting dat much from him. But you can understand that, his mind is some what negetive. Means he tries to friendship with wrong people, use abusive langauage. When we try to explain hin that this is wrong he starts blaming us that we are wrong and watever he is foin is right. And sonetimes he takes his XXXXXXX phone and tries to act like dis that he is talking to some person and behaves as if he is big business men. We just want that he cud understand us. And just cud live a life nicely. And nothing else. All livelyhood and responsibilities and through all life we are with him. Will he will not ne like dis also. No cure or medication could help. As we al know his intelligence level. So protect him we are with him. But he could be little down and easyway we cannot make his life???

Brief Answer:
Avoing conflict is one part of treatment

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for reverting back to me.

I understand frustration associated with caregiving of mentally retarded person and it is common that they blame the family members most who want to do every possible thing for them. But as we know, frustration can not help in any way. On similar lines we can not give them our thought process and could not expect everything from patient, which we think could be appropriate for family.

On most of the occasions patient do not believe family members and may develop suspiciousness toward them, making things much harder.

As I said earlier avoiding conflict is one part of treatment and this saves from difficult situations on many occasions.
In addition compliment the patient for any good behavior. Do with even for minor things, which are good for family and society. On the other hand engage him for one or another activity.

Medications are another part of treatment and I think Dr Jhanvar has done justice by prescribing appropriate amount of medications. There are few medications which do not have any role in mental retardation like admenta. On next visit discuss with your doctor why it was prescribed. I hope he prescribed for some valid reason which is not mentioned by you. In case this is not the case, you can request him to remove admenta.

I hope this helps you.
Thanks and regards

Brief Answer:
Engaging him for some work is best thing along with medications

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for reverting back to me.

Since he has multiple psychiatric conditions along with MR, it is really difficult to manage such patients without considerable effort.

In my view get help of any occupational therapist in your city (BHU have some) and engage him in some work which interests him and which he can do with little or no supervision.

Medication can help him to remain calm and compose and engagement will improve his functioning.

Our aim should be to improve his confidence and to provide support so he do not become burden to family.

I hope this helps you.
Thanks and regards
