Suggest Treatment For Minor Degenerative Narrowing Of The L4-5 Disc

Question: Hi,
I have been diagnosed minor degenerative narrowing of the L4-5 disc space.
Will there be any treatment to reduce it or will it eventually grow with the age. I am 27 years old and very concerned about it.
Please let me know
Brief Answer:
May remain static for sometime.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for using Healthcare Magic.
Minor degeneration in the lumbar area is reasonably common and may stay static in the long term. If you are suffering back pain and stiffness, I suggest you take regular low impact exercise such as swimming, cycling and walking. Exercises to strengthen your lower back muscles will help. Pain killers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen should be considered for first line management.

Thanks for your recommendations, Can I do running?
I have the habbit of running to control weight growth, but I have been experiencing some pain when I am running.
Brief Answer:
May be OK.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for the further question. I would suggest either running on a treadmill which will be cushioned to a degree and reduce the impact and stress on your back. Or ensure you have good running shoes to reduce the impact if you are running outside.
I hope this is of help. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Regards,
Dr K A Pottinger
