Brief Answer:
Urinary tract infection/stones to rule out as following...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

You are reporting to:
- have waves of mild spasms in you stomach (lower left portion)
- solid stool
- urine, red and too warm

From what you are describing, the symptoms you are having are due to urinary tract infection (UTI) or kidney stones.
Constipation is also to consider.
I advise to run further tests to determine the right cause and appropriate treatment:
- urine analysis
- abdominal ultrasound
- complete blood count

For the moment, you should:
- increase water intake (the red urine is indicating presence of blood or too concentrated; drinking lots of water/fluids will help dilute urine and ease the symptoms)
- take urine alkalinizers (cranberry, uva-ursi, fern stone)
- take mephenamic acid to ease the pain

Once again, you need immediate medical evaluation. If you cannot schedule an immediate appointment with your doctor and run the advised tests, then, should go to ER.

Wish fast recovery!

Thank you. Yes I've been a bit constipated today and put a lot of pressure for bowel movement for an extended period of time [more than hour]. It is only after that that the urine became red. The spasms were there before all this and the initial urine right after getting up from bed was normal [not red or warm]. So can the constipation issue as described above explain the red urine?

Also, what type of risk factors lead to urinary tract infection?

Brief Answer:
Constipation causes urine retention precipitating UTI...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

1. Yes, constipation is the cause to the abdominal spasms you experienced.

2. The red urine is indicating it is concentrated. However, blood is to exclude through urine analysis.
Please take note that when you strain (especially too hard), the muscles of pelvic floor are putting pressure on your bladder and urinary pathways and might have caused a little of laceration as it is considered as trauma.
Trying to prevent constipation can ease your symptoms too.

3. Risk factor for UTI include:
- urine retention during straining due to constipation
- being uncircumcised
- not drinking enough water
- abnormalities in the urinary tract
- catheter use
- any procedure done in your urinary tract recently

However, in your case, I believe: constipation, not drinking enough water are main factors to cause UTI.

Hope it answered to your queries!

Thanks a lot for your answers.

So assuming the cause is constipation [and only today; I am generally not constipated] should I just wait for a couple of days to see if the problem goes away, and not go to see a doctor right away?

I also have been having a lot of belching for the past 3-4 days probably due to having my meals in an untimely manner [have been very busy with packing to move to a new residence]. Could this have led to the spasms and constipation today?

Finally, what type of food can I have for the next few days and is there any OTC medicine I need to take [btw, after having some tea and cookies my spasms have recently decreased in both frquency and intensity]?

Brief Answer:
Following answers to your queries...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

1. To my opinion, watch and see is the best strategy. So, can wait for a few more days to see if urine will come red again or not. If yes, then, should go for further tests.

For the moment, increase fluids intake, and avoid constipation (by eating more fiber, taking laxatives and probiotics)

2. Irregular meals are also possible cause to constipation with less bowel movements. Belching is a sign from your stomach to get food due to hyperacidity.

With regards to today's spasms, they are related to constipation; your bowels find it difficult to pass the hardened stool. Constipation has been caused to irregular meals and eating non-healthy foods during these busy days).

3. In order to ease constipation problems, I advise to:
- increase fluids intake
- have your meals regularly
- take senna candies to ease bowel movements (bm)
- take lactulose to soften the stool
- take probiotics to optimize intestinal flora
- get more physical activity
- eat more fiber rich foods; can take fiber supplements containing psyllium
- take antacids after meal; antacids will help optimize the pH of your urine too
- mephenamic acid or buscopan can ease spasms

If no improvement within a few days, then, should go and see your doctor further.

Wish fast recovery!
