Suggest Treatment For Nasal Congestion And Sinus Infection

default
Posted on Wed, 18 Feb 2015
Question: My nose is congested and dripping into my throat. I smell the same unusual smell with everything. I can smell this unpleasant smell and it overpowers everything. I smell the grass, my shirt, food and it all has the same smell. I rinsed with a salt nasal bottle and know this is coming from my nose. I stopped taking my anxiety medicine Thursday - Lexapro - 5 mg a day, Lorazapram - 1 mg a day and sometimes at night to help sleep. I have been taking these medications for about 2 years in these dosages. Is this related to tranquilizer withdrawal or something else?

Brief Answer:
it can be a sinus infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello

There can be two possibilities for your symptoms

First possibility is that you may be having a sinus infection and this is causing the nose to be congested and dripping into your throat. For this your ent doctor, who will examine you and start you on a course of antibiotics, which will give you relief.

The second possibility may be your anxiety and drug withdrawal , which is manifesting as your disturbance in smell and for this i would like you to meet your psychiatrist, who will be in the best to guide you.

Take care!

The prescribing doctor is my primary care physician. I will make an appointment. I do not think this is a sinus infection. How does my withdrawal phase manifest itself in sense of smell as I went on line and saw the symtoms such as runny nose, muscle aches, anxiety, etc. I did not see anything about smell.

Brief Answer:
it can be due to anxiety

Detailed Answer:
Hello

The sense of smell is one of the oldest senses and is very very closely related to your emotional state. There are multitude of complex connections between your olfactory area of brain and the area for emotions, and both areas are very much interlinked.

please dont worry you will be fine , just try to control the anxiety and meet your doctor.

Thanks
