Question: Hello doc!! It has been more than a month now after I had my torus palatinus surgery and just when I thot that my would is healing and I could start eating without much pain I am facing a strange problem.. Sometimes when I eat a little spicy food or drink water I can feel slight pain in right nose (as the area is towards right) and the pain goes down towards the junction between throat and the nose.I feel as though the food get stuck or water entered the nose which causes pain and stuffiness. when I blow my nose using a tissue I can see water slightly coming out but sometimes I don't have to blow because right after drinking water or a tea I can feel it slightly coming out of my nose ..especially while having anything spicy it enter my nose and it hurts quite bad and i have to stop eating .i have become so conscious in eating anything and also the back of my nose hurts.. while laying down I could feel slight pressure on the nose and my head also starts to ache due to pressure..m scared something is wrong or there is an infection . I consulted my doctor earlier when the i wasnt sure what was happening and he said everything seemed normal and there is no infection and that the operated area is healing well and that I worry too much but honestly now only I'm beginning to worry a lot as he said there is nothing to worry about but the problem is so discomforting and I want to know if it will be fine.. Pls help..m thinking to visit my doctor again ..Thankyou

Brief Answer:
use nasal decongesents

Detailed Answer:

Hello again,

Answers and solutions for your queries and problems.

1. Dripping through nose during swallowing is nasal regurgitation or speech difficulty (hypernasality) commonly occurs after palate surgery due to delayed
healing or due to infection or due to fistula (connection between oral cavity and nose).

2. Nasal catarrh- commonly seen in allergic rhinitis individuals, hypersensitivity of nasal mucosa to pungent smells or spicy foods, stimulates the receptors and causes nasal pain and watering through nasal cavities. can be managed with nasal decongestant drop (over the counter xylometazoline 3drops/3times).

3. Do not worry, it takes time (your treating doctor confirmed, there is no infection).

4. In case of severity, you need to consult swallowing specialist ( to learn different postures during swallowing to avoid regurgitation).

All the best, take care.
