Suggest Treatment For Nausea And Diarrhea While On Treatment For Strep Throat

Question: My 25 yr old daughter just went back to college. Within a week she started to feel ill and went to a walk in clinic. She was diagnosed with strep throat and given Zythromycin due to penicillin group allergies. She started feeling better after taking the antibiotic but continues to have some nausea and diarrhea. In the early stages she also had vomiting. She started to go to class today and had to turn around due to diarrhea. Can you assist?

Dear Ms
It is most likely to be due to antibiotic induced diarrhoea. I would suggest you the following
1. Stop further use of Zythromycin
2. Oral probiotics will be helpful
3. Use of oral rehydration solution to maintain hydration
4. Nausea can be managed by antiseptics like Domperidone along with acid suppressant like Pantoprozole.
Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Should she get another antibiotic for the step throat if she discontinues the Zythromycin?
My wife says she is also allergic to clindamyacin. So if she goes on another antibiotic, what would you recommend knowing she is allergic to penicillin and clindamycin.

Brief Answer:
Further use of antibiotic is not recommended
Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir
Further use of any antibiotic is not recommended. Majority of respiratory tract infection are self limiting in origin and do not require antibiotics. Streptococcal infection is only diagnosed conclusively after confirmation by throat swab.
I would suggest other ways of taking care of respiratory tract infection.
I would suggest the following which will definitelty help in managing upper respiratory infection
1. Warm Saline Gargling: Add 2 spoons of salt to glass of lukewarm water and gargle 3-4 times a day
2. antihistamine like cetrizine will control symptoms
3. Decoction: 1 cup of milk+ 1 teaspoon turmeric+ 2 gm of ginger+ 10 leaves of tulsi(holy basel)+ 2 black pepper+ 2 spoon sugar, bring it to boil. Serve it hot to her, few sips at a time. To take it 4 times a day.
4. Steam inhalation for 15 minutes every session 4 times a day
