Posted on Mon, 27 Apr 2015
Question: For a week or so I have developed nausea, bloating, distended abdomen, and fatigue. I am on Xanax for acute onset anxiety disorder. I started Zofran yesterday with fair relief. I also have some SOB on exertion, but I am obese. My phsych believes these are symptoms of stress and anxiety. Any thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Exclude organic problems first...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your concerns.

Before determining that your GI problems are due to stress and anxiety, if I was your caring doctor would rule out organic problems first.

Nausea, bloating, distended abdomen and fatigue might be related to:
- gastritis
- GERD
- gallbladder problems
- nausea
- intestinal infection like candida

I need to also know if you are having problems with your bowel movements too? (diarrhea? constipation?)

From what you are describing, I advise to run further diagnostic tests :
- abdominal ultrasound to rule out gallbladder/pancreas issues
- liver/pancreas/kidney function test
- complete blood count to exclude anemia

For the moment, I recommend to:
- be careful with foods/drinks you consume
- take simethicone to ease bloating
- take probiotics to stabilize intestinal flora
- increase water intake
- have your meals regularly

If nothing organic is found after evaluations, then, and only then, we can discuss as possible side effects to stress and anxiety.

Hope it was of help!

Brief Answer:
Constipation a possible cause to your problems...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

1. Constipation itself is a cause to bloating, distended abdomen and nausea. Not being able to empty your bowels will cause also fatigue.

2. Simethicone is the generic name. You can ask at your local drug store under this name and they can provide immediately to you. It can be taken as over the counter medication.

As per your information, there are 2 names for a medication:
- generic name (the name commonly found all around the world)
- brand name (the name that your local pharmaceutical companies are manufacturing it).

The most common brand names include : Gravol, Zerogas (in combination with charcoal).

Hope it was of help!
