Brief Answer:
fosamax

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You have been diagnosed with osteoporosis and given a prescription of fosamax. You are concerned that the fosamax will cause GI upset. It can but it is usually due to not taking the medication properly. I would recommend taking the fosamax once weekly in the morning on an empty stomach and then being sure you stay standing or sitting up after taking it for 30 mins. I usually tell people take the medication before your morning shower or other morning routine. If you follow these instructions you should have no problem with fosamax.

Most insurance plans require a trial of fosamax before they will approve of other medications. There is prolia which is an injectable given under the skin every 6 months that will not cause any GI upset. Forteo which is another injectable but needs to be injected daily.

With whatever medication you use you must have enough calcium and vitamin D to help absorb the calcium. 1200mg of calcium daily and 800-1000 IU of Vitamin D daily.

I hope I answered your question. Please contact us again if you have any additional questions.

I have heard that Prolia is good, how many months until you have to take another, and does it not leave you with upset G.I, because that is what I want to avoid.
thank you.
