Question : A friend of mine who is 58 years old has just been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, stage 3. She was started on chemotherapy first, and after this will have surgery to remove remaining tumor, if any. I am not aware of the tissue diagnosis. Does she have a chance at remission? Dick

                                    Brief Answer:
Yes she has
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
Stage 3 ovarian cancer can either be treated with upfront surgery followed by six cycles of chemo or 3 cycles of chemo followed by surgery then 3 more cycles of chemo. Both have similar results.
Chances of having complete remission is 80% or more. However, at least 50% of these women would eventually relapse, at an average of 2-3 years. Many survive more than 5 years.
Hope this helps. I will be available for follow-up.
Regards
