Suggest Treatment For Pain And Swelling In Leg

default
Posted on Fri, 19 Feb 2016
Question: ON the 22nd of december I had a heavy fall on my left side. After a few hours the inside of my left leg was very swoolen. Now I have seen a local GP, but I am in the dark on what ongoing treatment is required to reduce the swelling. The injury does not and never did give me serious pain, the movement though is restriced, it feels as if the knee is wrapped in duck tape. I am taking antibiotics against infection. If required I can upload in image of the injury. My main request is whaty is the ongoing treatment for the swelling. I am seeing a practice regularly about the injury and I am seeing a phsyio tomorrow.

2 No, it may be slightly warm but I find it difficult to find it much different from anywhere else. Certainly no pian.

3 Just the I have mentioned

4 No

5 Resting the leg helps very much. Flexibilty of knee improves with mild exersize. It dose not like siitting down for a long time, theres no pain joint gets stiff though.

Note: Its is improving, now its noticeably better each day, as yet the the swelling has not decreased much.

Many thanks for your help iys most apreciated.

Excuse the spelling, the web browser colours for the text entry box, light grey on pale yellow, the contrast is very poor and I cannot easily see what I am writing.

Brief Answer:
Needs further workup at hospital for complete resolution

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thank you for getting back with the answers. Most common cause of swelling in such case includes joint effusion & local inflammatory changes. Both these causes occur due to trauma. If i were your treating doctor then i would have advised following things:

- take hot water in a rubber bottle and place it at the site of swelling. It will give soothing effect and relieve swelling.
- ibuprofen thrice a day for 3 days.
- visit hospital and get ultrasound of knee & swelling done to rule out any evidence of joint involvement.
- Do attend physiotherapy session. It will be of great help.

Normally such swelling resolves in 1-2 weeks but as 3 weeks have passed and it is still persisting so needs further workup at hospital. Above mentioned steps will give relief till you get an appointment.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!
