Question: Hello. I am a 23 year old female. I am a virgin. Around May 1st I had a sore and swollen lower stomach. It hurt for the pressure of the water to touch it in the shower. I felt like I needed to protect it as I walked around. It was more sore than pain, and I did continue to work and sleep normally. I did not feel ill in other ways. I didn't take any painkillers of any kind. I became increasingly worried about it (I do have some minor medical
anxiety), and one night felt like my lymph nodes were swollen and very sore, and it was hard to breathe and swallow. I went to the ER at a very respectable hospital - Abington Memorial. I had a blood and urine test which both came back normal. I had an
ultrasound by a woman who said she's been doing it for 25 years and thought things looked very normal. The doctor then looked at the scan and said I had a very small
ovarian cyst that they were not worried about. I had also been a bit off with my birth control (Yaz) that month and had missed a couple days. I am on birth control for bad period cramps that I've had since 14. The doctor said my lymph nodes were not swollen at all and that I likely had a
panic attack due to worrying about my swollen and sore lower stomach. I left the hospital much calmer and within a couple of days I felt normal. I have felt normal since then, except for some minor discomfort in my hip if I lay on my side in bed. About a week ago I began to notice minor discomfort in my hips and pelvic area. It feels as thought it is tight and there is pressure. I notice it when I lay flat on my back to go to sleep. I would not call it painful, and it is not swollen or nearly as uncomfortable as it was in May - its more tight and pressure. I am able to work out, but when I stretch during barre class, sometimes I feel like its tight in my pelvic area. I have normal energy and no other symptoms bothering me. A doctor did mention that ovarian cysts often come a few at a time, so I suppose it could be that. My primary question is can the ultrasound from may 1st which looked very normal except for a very small ovarian cyst rule out the presence of ovarian cancer? Is it possible that I actually have a tumor or that the cyst was improperly diagnosed? Should I ask for a second scan? From my reading, if ovarian cancer is suspected, a
blood test and ultrasound are usually the first two steps. I don't believe I was given the CA125 test but I was given an ultrasound. They gave me lots of fluids and waited until I had a very full bladder so that they could get a good reading. I admit that I read too much online and do stress myself out but at the same time I feel like something is off and want to be sure I'm being my best advocate. Thanks so much for any information you can provide.
I also went to my GP two weeks later as a follow up to the ER visit. At that time I was not having
pelvic discomfort. She again tested my blood and said things were normal and thought lymph nodes were not swollen. She also tested my
thyroid and celiac. All came back normal.
