Suggest Treatment For Pain And Swelling On The Knee
Question: I've had very recent pain and swelling in my left knee. I had an MRI and the results showed the following:
Articular cartilage thinning patellofemoral joint and medial joint space with subchondral cyst formation
Joint effusion with Baker's cyst
Thickening of the medial collateral ligament at the femoral insertion.
Large subchondral cyst in the posterior aspect of the upper pole of the patella
myxoid degeneration.
I'm 52 and very active. What is the prognosis and treatment. Because of a previous CABG surgery I am unable to take NSAID's.
thanks

Brief Answer:
You are having arthritis of the knee joint
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case and these are suggestive of knee osteoarthritis. In this condition there is damage to knee cartilage and difficulty in knee bending. Before ia advised you any management I would like to know little detail about the illness.
1.Since when you are having knee joint pain?
2.Do you feel like taking pain killer daily?
3. Are you ready for surgery in knee joint if needed?
Please send me answers of these questions.I will try my best to help you.
Thanks

The knee pain started about 2 months ago. I was playing softball and after the game my knee became very swollen. The knee was drained, but the fluid returned but not to the previous level. I had no knee pain prior to the softball game. Now, my mobility is somewhat limited and I can't run. My knee is very stiff and sore. I have a lot of cracking within the joint that was not there prior to the injury. At this point in order to do anything approaching normal activity I need to take a painkiller. If having surgery would let me resume my normal levels or activity then I would definitely be willing. My doctor has prescribed and a series of injections. I don't know the name of the medication, but I do know that you are given one injection a week for three weeks. I hope this is helpful

Brief Answer:
You need to avoid sports for some time
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I think your knee may have developed synovitis and that is why you are having so much pain. I would recommend you to rest for one month time and do not involve in sporting activity or sitting on ground or squatting.
I would also suggest you to follow these steps.
1. Injections are not good for knee. If they are of steroids then they can damage knee further. They did not offer permanent solution.
2. Tablet Etorixoxib one daily.
3. Hot water fomentation
4. Knee cap during day time.
if these measures continued for threw weeks then your pain will be relieved. Still if there is pain then you might need to stop playing games which involves lot of jumping. You can play Golf though.
I hope this answer will be useful for you. Let me know if there is any other followup questions.
Thanks
