Brief Answer:
Gallstones or urinary tract issues.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Where was the pain located? Was it right or left side of back? Has it appeared after some foods intake? Have you had nausea? Diarrhea?

Abdominal pain radiating to back is usually caused by gallstones or urinary tract issues.

Gallstones usually give right upper abdominal pain which radiates to back. Nausea, lack of appetite, bloating can be also present. Such pain appears after foods intake.

Urinary tract infection or stones gives left or right back pain along with lower abdominal pain, frequent urinating and burning while urinating. Fever can be present.

Even if the pain is gone, I suggest you to have at least blood work, urine analysis and abdominal ultrasound done as it may come back.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

My gall bladder was taken out about 10 years ago. I do not have frequent urination or burning. The pain was across my whole lower back, not just right or left. It was across my stomach, but was worse in the back radiating out to the sides. It did not occur right after eating.

Brief Answer:
Stone in bile ducts is still possible.

Detailed Answer:
Even if you do not have gallbladder, stones in bile ducts are also possible. Can give similar symptoms. Pancreas sometimes can act like that.
If it has appeared suddenly after some physical activity, spine disc problem can also be the case.
Please have at least abdominal ultrasound done. Even if its gone.
