Suggest Treatment For Pain, Redness And Irritation At The Site Of Insect Bite
Question: I live in Arizona. I was bitten/stung by something (could be recluse, could be scorpion, both are in the home) more than two weeks ago. Initially, I had pain and irritation at the site (lower abdomen near torso/leg intersection) which caused me to check it out after a couple of hours. I never saw the critter that did it, I just thought I was experiencing some odd sensation. That night I had a lot of redness and it felt like I had a pea under my skin (felt larger but pea sized hard knot seems about right). I was worried it was a recluse bite, but while I developed a deep purple pencil eraser sized spot under the skin, it never became obviously necrotic. For a week I did have shooting pains to the bottom of my right ribcage. Pains subsided, skin peeled, but still have the purple dot and there is still a lump and irritation. What next? Thank you!! ps: not sure why this is funneled to an orthopedic surgeon...XXXX

Uploaded a pic. Peeled skin is about half inch, purple spot is about quarter inch (like I said, about the size of a pencil eraser).

Tick bites?? Who said anything about ticks? I asked about scorpions or recluse, as both are present in the home at all times because I LIVE IN THE DESERT. I was seeking information about what to do since this bite/sting has not taken the same course as the previous confirmed scorpion sting. If you do not have experience with scorpion stings or recluse bites, I request you to forward this to someone who does have experience.

I have managed several scorpion bites before and am pretty comfortable addressing them. I have reviewed your image again and it is not suggestive of a concerning state. Though the healing has not taken the same course as previous confirmed scorpion bites, there is no finding on the image you have sent which raises a red flag that needs aggressive medical intervention at this time. I still maintain that you only observe this for now.
You mentioned the pain has significantly reduced. The lump/hard spot is inflamed tissue that hasn’t regained its initial state. However, peeling of the skin is typical of inflammation regression which characterizes healing!
