Please consult surgeon, most likely neurofibromas

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Though you have not mentioned much about the cysts in your query, I have read through your earlier query answered by another doctor and suppose that you need help for two swellings located in your arm and stomach and which have recently become painful and hard.

I am not certain about the swellings being lipomas unless you have consulted a surgeon and got the diagnosis confirmed. In your medical history I find that you have not consulted any doctor and in that situation, I would keep the diagnosis open pending clinical and imaging investigations.

In medical terms, a cyst can hold different meanings with regard to their location, structure and contents. Usually a cyst is a fluid filled small or large rounded swelling.

In my experience, small soft to firm swellings below the skin, in arm and stomach which were earlier painless and show recent development of pain and hardness, most likely fit into the diagnosis of neurofibroma. A neurofibroma is an usually benign tumor containing nerve and fibrous elements which is soft to firm and painless to start with and with progressive increase in size over time, it can infiltrate a nerve and then cause pain.

A lipoma is very soft and slips under the skin and clinical examination usually confirms it.

I suggest that you do not ignore the swellings as a diagnosis is very important to be made and though they are usually benign, rarely it can also become a cancer in future as there is pain and hardness.

Surgeons usually make a preliminary diagnosis easily with clinical examination. If required they may ask for an imaging investigation like ultrasound scan. This will show the size, extent and origin of the swelling. Any increased blood flow and whether it is lipoma (fat containing) or neurofibroma will also be known.

Depending on the clinical and imaging diagnosis, if there is doubt of a cancer like features, the surgeon might ask for a pathological examination like FNAC or biopsy to confirm that diagnosis.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

I am glad to know that you will consult a doctor tomorrow.

Iif it is a neurofibroma and there is hardness and pain then cancer may be present, but such changes are extremely rare. However do not neglect it and don't worry about cancer.

Hope your query is answered.
