Suggest Treatment For Painful Bruise On Hip

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Oct 2014
Question: I fell off a bike and landed hard on L hip, couldn't move for a few minutes then rode home. 5cm bruise appeared later on L hip in impact area. This happened 7 days ago and still have significant pain on rising and walking and rotating L leg. I'm a 54 yo female, 5'7" 145 lbs and very athletic. Not sure if I need to see my primary/get XRay. Motrin alleviates pain a bit but still hurts deep on L side. Please advise!

Brief Answer:
Hematoma likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

There doesn’t seem to be any obvious fracture as you are able to bear your weight on the leg.
The hardness and the pain could be due to blunt trauma to the bone or soft tissue around it leading to break in capillary blood vessels which in turn give rise to haematoma (internal bleeding and clot). Rest assured it will subside in a week more. But if you have persistent pain, please go ahead and confirm the diagnosis with CT scan.

Use anti inflammatory medications - ibuprofen prescribed by your physician for few days. Try not to get it in extreme positions unless required. Occasional hot fomentation is recommended. Begin movements of leg gradually.

I hope this answers your query.
