Suggest Treatment For Papillary Thyroid Cancer
Question: I had two major surgeries just 4 months apart. First surgery was thyroidue to papillary thyroid cancer. I had some hair shedding a few months after the second surgery (total hysterectomy). I am on 175 mcg of Synthroid. My hair loss has slowed considerably, but the hair that is growing in is thin and sickly looking. Is this normal? Will my hair eventually return to (some level) of its original density? At the moment, I am not hypothyroid. I'm actually being kept s but hyperthyroid to minimize Cancer recurrence.
Brief Answer:
Yes, most likely it will
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
It appears that your hair loss has reversed and new hair is growing. Now that you are on thyroxine supplementation, it should grow well. But we should remember that both hypo and hyperthyroid can cause hair loss, as also premature menopause. You have not mentioned your age and whether ovaries has also been removed in the surgery.
But still I feel that as it is growing, the density and original character should come back, at least partially.
Hope this helps. I will be available to answer further followup queries, if any.

Thank you, Dr. XXXXXXX I am 49 and my ovaries were removed. I had very bad endometriosis and I am not on any form of HRT. I have had very few side effects from the surgical menopause and am hoping all of these hormonal changes caused a temporary bout of hair loss, since a normal loss pattern (5-10 hairs after showering) and some growth has returned.
Brief Answer:
Yes it will improve
Detailed Answer:
The premature menopause is definitely contributing but as things are improving, let's hope for the best.
