Suggest Treatment For Peripheral Neuropathy And Ruptured Discs In Lower Back

default
Posted on Tue, 11 Aug 2015
Question: I have had peripheral neuropathy for over 20 years. I am 83 yrs old. My family dr.referred me to a neurologist many years ago who prescribed neurontin, which made me very ill. This was followed up by several other prescriptions that didn't work either. My family Dr. decided to to handle my case himself. After a time he settled on morphine sulfate (30 Mg. once a day, later increased twice to 3 times a day. This along with Ropinarole 30Mg twice a day, for RLS., and finally Pantoprazole 40 Mg. twice a day for Acid Reflex. I have three ruptured disks in lower back. And finally I have had reverse shoulder replacement in both shoulders. I have been athletically active all my life. Now, today as I was leaving a restaurant I could not lift my right foot off the ground. It felt like it weighed 500 lbs. I could only drag it along the ground. After about 15 or 20 minutes it subsided and did not return. This is the second time this has occurred in about a week and has me concerned. My Dr. Is on vacation, or at least away from the office for a period of time.
Do you have any idea what might have caused this?

Brief Answer:
Can you precise what area? Below the knee or all of the leg?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this symptoms of being unable to lift your leg. It is so unfortunate that this has happened twice. It is most likely related to decreased blood flow to this area when you sit. I will advice you try to avoid folding/bending the legs as the nerves and blood supply are easily compromised. This leads to the nerve going numb and unable to execute commands. I must précise this is not stroke and should not send you panicking. For now, light exercises, massage and good postures will do. Patiently wait until your doctor is back unless something else comes up and we think it is necessary to get evaluated immediately.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
