Is Urethra Dilation The Only Effective Treatment For Urethral Stenosis?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Nov 2017
Question: Dear urologist,
My urologist dilated me 3 months ago and then we set up 3 month follow up, which is next week for follow up dilation again. It,s not as bad as originally but still a problem that sometimes I feel I need to go pee but then nothing comes out. So then I need to try again later. Is a urethra dilation the only remedy if one pill before made me so lightheaded I was afraid I,d fall. I have had 5 bad falls and the shoulder replacement was in Feb. & dr. Said if I fall, I might break my new shoulder. I was ok at recent checkup. Help, you opinion pls.

Brief Answer:
You have what is called as Urethral Stenosis

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for query
Based on the facts that you have posted you seem to have Urethral Stenosis which is very common at this age

Your Urologist has rightly done Urethral dilatation (calibration).

Ideally Urethral Dilatation is to be followed by Self Intermittent Dilatation every day for Three months at home This avoids need to do frequent Dilatation .

Please go ahead and get it done.

Thanks and Regards
Dr. Patil

To Dr XXXXXXX urologist,

Thank u very much for your helpful reply.

My sister had back surgery Sept. 12 in California. I talk to her every day. She is having incontinence, wearing pull-ups, most trouble is over night with incontinence, she gets up 2 X per night even tho she is already wet in diaper. They opened up L3, L4, L5 to make more room and scraped off - bone spur. She was having trouble and could not pee periodically or at all. They catheterized her 3 times at cedars Sinai hospital and Drs office. Wants to know if she will stay incontinent permanently or will it go away when spine heals more from surgery?

P.S. My urologist thought if any pill made me feel like I was going to fall, that all pills to make me pee more would be the same re possibility of falling! Do agree with that re fall risk? Tnx!

Hilary had the catheter in for 10 days. When she couldn't,t pee while it was out, they,d put it back in again. Inserting it, she would scream from the pain.
Many thanks.

Brief Answer:
She would probably need long-term catheterization

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for following up,
Sorry for the delay in my response,

It is common not to pass urine after spinal surgery and takes 3-4 months to regain bladder control till then it is always advisable to keep self-retaining catheter and give bladder training.

Thanks and Regards
